A petition seeking suspension of registration of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as a political party has been filed with the Supreme Court.
The petition, filed by a barrister, has made the federal government, ECP and TLP leaders Khadim Rizvi and Afzal Qadri as respondents.
It stated that the TLP is working against the interests of the state. It pleaded that action should be taken against Rizvi and Qadri for spreading chaos and terrorism following the top court verdict in Asia Bibi case, adding that both the religious leaders should be held for contempt of court.
Earlier on November 10, a writ petition was also filed in the Lahore High Court requesting the federal government to initiate treason proceedings against Rizvi and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. The petition filed by a local citizen had argued that the two political leaders issued statements against the judiciary and the armed forces.
